Model guide
Online course platform vs. learning management system
Creator platforms optimize for selling expertise. Learning management systems optimize for administering learning. Some products overlap, but the operating model matters.
Choose a creator course platform when
You need landing pages, checkout, subscriptions, coupons, email, affiliates, communities, coaching, and direct-to-consumer sales with a small operating team.
Choose an LMS when
You need assigned training, departments, roles, compliance records, reporting, learner groups, integrations with HR or identity systems, and centralized administration.
Choose a hybrid when
You sell learning externally but also require deeper administration, customer academies, certifications, or business-to-business training portals.
Questions that reveal the right model
- Who enrolls learners: the learner, a manager, or an administrator?
- Is the primary transaction a consumer sale or an organizational license?
- Are compliance records and audit trails required?
- Does the buyer need marketing automation or identity and HR integrations?
- Who owns support, content operations, and reporting?
Avoid category labels alone
Vendors use “platform,” “LMS,” “academy,” and “community” inconsistently. Compare actual workflows, limits, and contracts.
